Hypoxic-anoxic injury.

A 27 years old female patient with right hemiparesis. What is the diagnosis?

Hypoxic – anoxic injury.

This can occur when someone is drowning, choking, suffocating, or in cardiac arrest. Brain injury and carbon monoxide poisoning are other possible causes of brain hypoxia. The condition can be serious because brain cells need an uninterrupted flow of oxygen to function properly. Severe global hypoxic-ischemic injury in this population primarily affects the gray matter structures. The predominance of grey matter injury is due to its high metabolic requirement for oxygen and glucose to supply a large number of synapses. This makes grey matter more susceptible to hypoxic-ischemic injury.
